Sample 1.1 Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows Xp
Leo: Tony, I just bought a new laptop to replace my old one. But it is tedious to reconfigure the computer. How can I transfer files and settings from the old computer to the new one? Tony: You can do this by using the “File and Settings Transfer Wizard” in Windows Xp. You can use this wizard to transfer desktop settings, display settings, dial-up connections, and other types of settings. You can find it by clicking Accessories, System Tools. Leo: Can you tell me more about it?
Tony: First, you should get the files and the settings from the old computer. On the old computer, select Old Computer in the first step. The second step, select a transfer
method, such as floppy driver or other removable media. The third step, click the option that corresponds to the items that you want to transfer. You can choose Settings only, Files only, or Both files and settings. At last, wait as the Wizard processes the items. Leo: well, what should I do on the new computer?
Tony: To transfer the files and the settings to the new computer, select New Computer in the Wizard. Then click “I don’t need the Wizard Disk. I have already collected my files and settings from my old computer”. And then select the transfer method. Leo: Thank you very much, Tony. Tony: You are welcome.

Sample 1.2 Automate Disk Defragmenting Using Task Scheduler in Windows XP
Leo: Some system utilities have to be started manually, such as the Disk Defragmenter tool. It
is inconvenient. I am wondering how I can make disk defragmenter run on the schedule I have specified.
Tony: You can automate Disk Defragmenter using the Task Scheduler Tool in Windows Xp. Leo : What shall I do to add a scheduled task?
Tony: Go to Control Panel and enter Scheduled Tasks. Then double-click Add Scheduled Task.

And then click Browse and navigate to the window/system32 folder, and select defrag.exe. Then set the frequency of the task, for example, Weekly. To make it run properly, the following setting is more important.
Leo : All right. What’s that?
Tony : In the next step, enter an administrator’s name and password. Before clicking the Finish
button, Check Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish.
Leo: I got it. What’s next?
Tony: In the Run text box, you should see the full path and command for defrag.exe. Append
the drive letter for the drive you wish to defragment to the command in the Run text box, like this:“C\\\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\defrag.exe C:”。

Sample 1.3 Use the Recovery Console to Recover the Missing Boot Files
Leo : Tony, I need your help. When I start my computer, Windows XP won’t work. And I was

Tony: That means the boot files needed to start the system are missing or go wrong. Leo : What should I do about this?
Tony : By using the Recovery Console, you can fix this problem. Leo : Where can I find it?
Tony : You can run it from the Emergency Repair process. Use the Windows Startup disk to start
the computer. When you see the “Welcome to Setup” message, press R for “repair.”Press C to run the Recovery Console.
Leo : After that, what shall I do?
Tony: Select the installation that you want to repair and type in the administrator password. At
the Recovery Console command prompt, type the commands. And then restart your computer.
