W: Professor Carter, you’re well known in town as a math professor at the City College. We’re
writing about what professional people do in their spare time for our paper. Can I ask you a few questions about your favourite hobbies?
M: Sure. I love talking about my hobbies. In fact I’m a coin collector. W: How long have you been collecting coins?
M: Since I was 12 years old. My uncle gave me a book with spaces to put coins in. W: How did your interest grow?
M: I filled that book and kept looking at the coins I got, and then I wanted to search for more rare
and old ones.
W: Where do you find the coins for your collection?
M: Sometimes from my colleagues, but usually I buy them from other collectors or trade with them. W: Thank you for the interview, Professor Carter. I think people will enjoy reading about your
interest.

began in some of the big towns and then we visited little schools in villages. M: What impressed you most when you were staying there?
W: Well, in some schools the children didn’t have enough books, but they could speak and write
English very well.

W: Yes, it seems he does. And I feel just as strongly about keeping my job. M: Well, it sounds like a serious quarrel. I hope you can work it out soon. W: So do I.
M: By the way, do you want me to talk to John about it?
W: No, not at the moment, thanks. We both need time to think it over.

The first case was found in December of 2003 in Washington State. But it was an animal imported from Canada. This time, officials say it was a twelve-year-old cow born and raised in Texas. It was born before 1997, when the government banned feeding the remains of cattle to other cattle. The disease can spread that way. But Agriculture Department officials now say tests on cows from the same group have found no other cases. After the first case, some countries reduced the import of American beef. By the end of June, sixty-four countries stopped or partly stopped the import of American beef. Top importer Japan as well as South Korea, China and Taiwan continue to ban all American beef. Canada and Mexico have partial bans. A trade group in the United States says exports fell eighty-six percent last year.
