When I was 11 years old and living under the Israeli occupation, I took a chance and after curfew (宵禁) I ran to visit my grandmother who lived two blocks away from us. On the road, I had to hide under a truck to avoid soldiers coming my way. For 20 minutes I lay there in utter fear watching their boots walk back and forth in front of the truck. My heart was pounding so fast and loud that I was afraid one of the soldiers would hear it and I would be killed instantly.

To calm myself, I started begging God to take mercy on me and save me from these men and their guns. I remembered the words of my mother after Israeli soldiers beat my father. She told us to put our fear and anger aside and pray for the poor soldiers, who were also afraid because they were away from their homes in Israel.

I began to feel bad for the soldiers. I wondered: Where do they sleep and are they afraid of little children like me? What kind of food do they eat? Do they have big or small families? My fear eased a bit as I pictured the soldiers as people I knew. Although my 20 minutes under the truck seemed like an eternity, I believe that shedding my fear literally saved my life.

Thirty-six years later I look around and see another kind of devastation created by fear. After Sept. 11, the Arab and Muslim community segregated themselves because of the level of suspicion directed at them from others. Fear of association because of ethnicity led many to retreat within themselves and their community. They stopped socializing with non-Arab/Muslim colleagues and neighbors. Once again, we allow differences to separate us because of fear.

I believe it is fear we should be fighting not the \tribe; that kinship supersedes our differences. We are all soldiers patrolling the road, and we're all little children hiding under the truck.

B. soldiers were coming her way back and forth in front of the truck.. C. she was afraid of being found and killed by Israeli solders. D. she was living under Israeli occupation and just after curfew. 62. Why did Mother tell the author to pray for the solders?

A. Because she wanted to calm her daughter down .

B. Because she wanted to beg God to take mercy on her daughter. C. Because pray can help her put fear and anger aside.

D. Because they were also afraid for being away from home in Israel.

63. In this passage, the author wants to__________.

A. tell us some interesting stories in her life. B. give us a lesson that fear is our enemy, not the other. C. tell us that we all belong to human tribe. D. tell us that fear is nature of human beings. C

Enter a typical high school, and the first thing you see is the front office, where the principal dwells and grades are stored. The front office also reinforces familiar hierarchy: principal at the top, teachers in the middle, kids on the bottom, sitting with hands folded at their desks.

Now, imagine a school where the organizational structure is completely flat. At the New Country School in Henderson, Minn., there is no front office. Visitors are immediately embraced by an airy atrium that is the centerpiece of this one-room schoolhouse. And all around the room, 124 students sit at desks — real office desks — working at their own personal computers on their own projects.

When Dee Thomas and her colleagues got together 15 years ago to design a new high school, they knew there was one thing that had to go: The bell. \and say, 'OK, for the first 45 minutes of my job, I'm going to do the math part.' And then a buzzer goes off, and you do the social history part of your job. You don't do that,\

There are no teachers at New Country. Every few weeks, students must present projects they've been working on to the rest of the school community. To prepare for their presentations, they gather at tables in the middle of the school atrium and present their work to their \

Kids at New Country test better than their peers on the state tests and on the pre-college ACT. The school sends 90 percent of its graduates to college. But that doesn't tell the whole story. New Country struggles to keep its seniors from leaving. The school's senior project is demanding — 300 hours of work.

But for some students, New Country offers a rare alternative, a choice they can't find anywhere else. And the school is constantly visited by educators from around the world looking for new ideas. That's the foundation of efforts to reform American high schools today — that there's a need to experiment with an institution that is failing millions of students

The Cave Crawler mining robot

Why do human beings still risk their lives under ground and doing one of the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs in the world? It's an increasingly urgent question, given the recent high-profile(引人注目的)mining accidents in Sago, W. Va., and Huntington, Utah. A small group of engineers and robotics experts envision(展望) a day in the not-too-distant future when robots and other technology do most of the dangerous mining work.

One of the first mining robots was developed five years ago at Carnegie-Mellon University's Robotics Institute. It was called Groundhog and it looked like a golf cart. It used lasers to \dark tunnels and map abandoned mines — some of the most dangerous work in the business.

The latest prototype is called Cave Crawler. It's a bit smaller than Groundhog, and even more advanced. It can take photos and video and has sensors mounted that can detect the presence of dangerous gases. Incredibly, the robot has a real sense of logic. If it comes across an obstacle it gets momentarily confused, it has to think through the process and where to go next, and sometimes it throws a fit just like a real person. The biggest obstacle, though, is cost. The original research project was federally funded, but that money has dried up, and it's not clear where future funding will come from. Partly for that reason, and partly because of advances in safety, mining is not nearly as dangerous as it was in the past. Since 1990, fatalities have declined by 67 percent, and injuries by 51 percent, according to the National Mining Association.

Some experts predict that robots in mines will serve much of the same function that they do in the automotive industry. The robots do the most repetitive and dangerous jobs, but don't eliminate the need for human workers.

68. The phrase “throw a fit ”in 3rd paragraph probably means_________.

A. get angry B. get shocked C. become excited D. become cheerful 69. The latest robot is more advanced than Groundhog mainly because_______

A. It can map abandoned mines. B. It's a bit smaller than Groundhog

C. It can see in the dark tunnel. D. The robot has a real sense of logic 70. We can infer from the last paragraph that__________ A. the mine robots will have a very bright future.

B. robots in mines will serve much in the automotive industry. C. there will be no need for human workers in mines D. robots in mines have a long way to go.

71. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage? A. High-profile mining accidents in America B. Could robots replace humans in mines?

C. The development of robot D. Cave Crawler, the latest robot

Latest research shows that yawning helps in keeping the brain cool, which is quite different from the popular belief that yawning promotes sleep and is a sign of tiredness.

Yawning involves opening the mouth while taking a long, deep breath of air. It is commonly believed that people yawn as a result of being sleepy or tired because they need oxygen. However, researchers at the University of Albany in New York said their experiments on 44 students showed that drawing in air helps cool the brain and helps it work more effectively. They said that their experiments showed that raising or lowering oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood did not produce that reaction.

Study participants were shown videos of people laughing and yawning, and researchers counted how many times the volunteers responded to their own “contagious(传染性的) yawns,” reported the online edition of BBC News. The researchers found that those who breathed through the nose rather than the mouth were less likely to yawn when watching a video of other people yawning. This was because the blood vessels(脉管)in the nasal cavity sent cool blood to the brain.

The same effect was found among those who held a cool pack to their forehead, whereas those who held a warm or room-temperature pack yawned while watching the video.

“Since yawning occurs when brain temperature rises, sending cool blood to the brain serves to maintain the best levels of mental efficiency,” the authors wrote in the journal Evolutionary Psychology.

C. their brain temperature rises D. oxygen levels in the blood is lowered

73. Which of the following statements about the new study is NOT true? A. Yawning can promote sleep.

B. The study was carried out by researchers at the University of Albany. C. Yawning can making our brain work more efficiently. D. Yawning can maintain the best levels of mental efficiency.

74. The underlined phrase “the volunteers ”probably refers to ____. A. study participants B. people laughing and yawning

C. researchers D. videos

75. In which section of a newspaper can you read this passage? ____. A. Science and technology B. Health C. Entertainment D. Culture.
