The musicians wer e to play jok es on each other as well as play mus ic, most of which was based loosely on the Beatles. The TV or ganizer had planned to find four musicians who could act as well as sing. Th ey put an adv ertis ement in a news paper lookin
g for rock musicians, but t
h ey could only find one who was good enough. They had t o us e actors for the other thr ee memb ers of th eband. As some of these actors could not s ing well enough, they had t o r ely on other mus icians t o help them. So during the br oadcasts they just pret end ed to sing. Anyhow their perfor mances wer e humor ous enough to be copied by other groups. They w ere so popular that their fans formed clubs in ord er to get mor e familiar with them. Each week on TV, th e Monkees would play and sing s ongs written by oth er musicians. Howev er, aft er a year or so in which they b ecame more ser ious about th eir work, the Monkees start ed to play and sing th eir own s ongs like a real band. Then they prod uced their own r ecords and started tour ing and playing th eir own music. In th e USA they b ecame ev en mor e popular than th e Beatles and sold even more records. The band br oke up ab out 1970, but h appily they reunit ed in the mid-1980s. Th ey produced a new r ecord in 1996, with which th ey celebrat ed their former time as a real band. Fr eddy the frog(Ⅱ)Not long aft er Fr eddy and the band ecame famous, they visited Britain on a brief t our. F ans showed th eir d evotion b y wait ing for hours to get tickets for their concerts . Fr eddy was now quit e confident when he w ent into a concert hall. He enjoyed s inging and all the congrat ulations afterwards! His most exciting invit ation was t o perform on a TV programme called Top of pops. He had to go to London, w ear an expensiv e s uit and give a per for mance
to a TV camera. It felt v ery strange. But as soon as the pr ogramme was ov er, the t elephones which w ere in the same r oom start ed r inging. Ev eryb ody was asking when th ey could s ee Freddy and his band again. They wer e truly st ars. Then things went wrong. Fr edd y and his band could not go out anywhere without being follow ed. Ev en when they wor e sunglasses or beards people r ecognized them. Fans found th em ev en when they went into t oilet. They tried t o hid e in th e r eading rooms of librar ies, but it was us eless. Someone was always th ere! Th eir personal life was regularly discussed by people who did not know th em but t alked as if th ey clos e friends. At last feeling v ery upset and sensitiv e, Freddy and his band realized that they must leav e th e country b efore it b ecame too painful for them. So they left Br itain, to which they wer e nev er 15
