Lift is difficult.

But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it.

Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, or even their nation. What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems depending on their nature cause us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yet, it is in this whole of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells success from failure. When we desire to encourage the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.”

2

It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

once we understand and accept it.

3. Why do we always set problems for school children to solve?

[A] Because we want to improve their ability to solve problems. [B] Because we want them to learn more knowledge.

[C] Because children feel like solving difficult problems.

[D] Because children always complain that life is difficult for them. 4. The sentence “Those things that hurt, instruct.” means that_______. [A]we won’t learn anything without being hurt or injured [B]painful experience is very important in making us stronger [C]we do not learn when we are in pain [D]physical pain should not be ignored

5. The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is to ________.

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.

Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up(蜷缩着)with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”

Before age 11, children like to tell their patents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list,” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the years,” Riera explained, “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”

3

Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them; To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a free space, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them. 1. What troubles Joanna and Henry?

[A]Their son doesn’t do well in studies.

[B]Their son begins to regard them as enemies.

[C]Their son is al ways unwilling to communicate with them. [D]Their son is always busy with his lessons.

2. What does the sentence “The problem is figuring out which time is

which.” Mean?

[A]The daughter is too strange to understand.

[B]The daughter is not as lovely and polite as before. [C]The daughter dislikes her parents. [D]The parents were at a loss to understand what’s on their daughter’s mind.

3. Which of the following best explains “the wall of silence” in the

last paragraph?

[A]Teenagers do not talk much with their parents. [B]Teenagers talk a lot with their teachers. [C]Teenagers talk a lot with their friends. [D]Teenagers misunderstand their parents. 4. Which of the following statements is true?

[A]Children always put their friends first on the list.

[B]Children are to blame if they don’t talk much to their parents. [C]The least freedom you offer, the best the children behave. [D]Parents should try to help their children. 5. What can we learn from the passage?

[A]Parents should punish their silent children as much as possible. [B]Parents should try to talk and write to their children. [C]Parents should try to understand their children. [D]Teachers should break down the wall of silence.

We are beginning to get more and more fed up with the “holiday by the sea”. We always used to go to the south coast regularly for a fortnight every summer. So we decided we’d better have some sort of a winter holiday. Some friends of ours told us we might not enjoy a skiing holiday, that it was always so cold you had to go skiing just to keep warm. We only had eight days instead of our normal fortnight away. All together, with the

Someone might set fire to a building for the insurance money, or to hurt one particular person. Arson (纵火) is a serious crime. And when a case exists, computers can help to find out who does it.

In a case in America, an arsonist (纵火犯)had been setting fire to several garages for eight months continually. It was not that the police had no trace to follow—they had received hundreds of pieces of secret information about the crime. They didn’t know where to begin. First the police created a file of the arsonist. They decided the places of all his fires on a computer map. The computer decided by postal code and neighborhood where the criminal most likely lived. One piece of information many people had given the police was that a dark blue van was
