摘要
委婉语是人类社会发展过程中的一种普遍的语言现象。在社会交往中，尊重他人，讲究礼貌是维护，促进人际关系的必不可少的因素，而委婉语正好为人与人的交流提供了一种有效的手段。委婉语的成因多种多样，探究委婉语的成因，将有助于我们理解在人类社会发展进程中，委婉语所起的重要作用，从而更好地运用委婉语来为我们的学习、工作和生活服务。而勿容质疑，政治与生活密切相关，因此，对政治委婉语的研究正引起人们的日益重视。西方的政治生活是产生委婉语的肥沃土壤，特别是政治风云变幻或战争爆发时，委婉语更是层出不穷。分析委婉语在政治舞台的应用，不仅能提高人们对外语的理解力，而且可以更准确的把握国内外政治事件的本质，从而更加充分地了解我们所处的这个复杂、多变的社会环境。

Abstract
Euphemism is a kind of universal language phenomenon in the developing process of human society. In social association, respecting other persons and keeping courtesy are essential factors to defend , promote interpersonal relations.Euphemism has offered a kind of effective means rightly for the intercourse of person to person. The causes of euphemism are varied. Probing the causes of euphemism will be helpful for us to understand developing process of human society and what an important role euphemism plays , so better utilizing euphemism for service of our study,work and lives. And there is not doubt that politics and life are related closely , therefore ，the political research of euphemism arouses increasing attention of people. Western political life is the rich soil that produces euphemism, especially at the moment when political situation is changing or when war erupts.Analysing the application of euphemism in political stage, can not only raise the comprehensibility of foreign language, but also enable people to catch the essence of domestic and international political events more accurately.In this way, we can understand the complex, changeable social environment fully in which we live.

引言
委婉语在新版牛津简明词典里被定义为用温和的或模糊的或迂回的表达来替代刺耳的或直接的表达。简而言之，使用委婉语就是用含蓄无害的或悦耳的词语来替代那些较为直接唐突的言辞，用善意的话语把事实掩盖起来。在生活中，当我们遇到一些不方便直说的话，但又不得不说的时候，可以恰当的运用委婉语来使原有生硬、粗俗的语言变成文雅、委婉的表达。
在当今高速发展的社会，人与人交流愈发密切而语言交际又是人类赖以维持社会关系和人际关系的重要手段，因此使用委婉语能避免双方不快从而协调人际关系。正如Enright所说 “如果没有委婉语，世界的运转会因摩擦而停止，人间将充满仇怨”。[1]委婉语是社会前进所必需的“润滑剂”。
一、 委婉语的成因
委婉语的产生是从“塔布”开始的，英语的Taboo或Tabos，一般音译成“塔布”或禁忌。“塔布”是波里尼西亚汤加群岛上土著民族的一种习俗。十八世纪的时候，航海家James Cook来到这个岛屿时，他发现当地人说话被严禁使用与一些特定的人，事物或行为有关的词。
英语的Euphemism的产生是从语言禁忌开始的，当人们不愿说出禁忌之事，而又不得不指明此事时，就必须用比较委婉的词语来替代要说的话。也就是说人们在放弃一个禁忌语的同时，就找到一个词语去填补这个空缺，于是也就创造了一个委婉语。
