In order to make use to learning materials, the Students’ Union of our school are planning

an activity. The school-leavers are called on to give away our used books, newspapers or

magazines to the student in the lower grades. The idea, that is intended to encourage a low-

carbon lifestyle, is praised and supported by the teachers and students. The activity will be hold

on the first floor of the school library and so it will last for eleven days, from June 10 to 20. As

student, I am strong for the activity because it is very meaningful and helpful. I hope this activity would continue every year in the future.

Shirley Horn was born in Washington, D.C. in 1934. She began taking piano lessons when she was four. When she was seventeen, she had a chance to attend the famous Juilliard School in New York City. But financial difficulties prevented her from going. Instead, she studied classical music at Howard University, where she planned to play classical music on the piano as a career.

However, all that changed after she began going to jazz clubs. She was influenced by some of the greatest jazz artists of all time. She then decided to perform jazz as her career.

At that time, Horn didn’t plan to be a singer. But it happened one day when she was playing the piano at a restaurant that a man offered her a huge toy teddy bear if she would sing

the song “Melancholy Baby”. Although she had never sung in public before, she agreed. She later realized that she could make a living by singing and playing jazz.
