第二卷 (非选择题,共40分)

第四部分: 任务型阅读(满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

A

From SIRI to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (AI) is progressing rapidly. While science fiction often pictures AI as robots with human-like characteristics, AI can include anything from Google?s search algorithms to IBM?s Watson to autonomous(自动的) weapons.

Over the last several decades, AI has become common in our lives. We plan trips using GPS systems that rely on AI to find the best route to take. AI algorithms detect faces as we take pictures with our phones and recognize the faces of individual people when we post those pictures to Facebook. Internet search engines rely on an AI subsystem. On any day, AI provides hundreds of millions of people with search results, traffic predictions, and recommendations about books and movies. Several companies are working on cars that can drive themselves.

Beyond the influences in our daily lives, AI techniques are playing a major role in science and medicine. For example, AI methods have been employed recently to discover interactions between medicines that put patients at risk for serious side effects.

However, when considering how AI might become a risk, experts think two possibilities: The AI is programmed to do something destructive: Autonomous weapons are artificial intelligence systems that are programmed to kill. They will have no human guidance after being programmed. They can select and fire upon targets without any human intervention. So they are a fundamental challenge to the protection of civilians(平民). If in the hands of the wrong person, these weapons could easily cause mass deaths.

The AI is programmed to do something beneficial, but it develops a destructive method for achieving its goal: This can happen whenever we don?t have the same goals as AI. If you ask an intelligent car to take you to the airport as fast as possible, it might get you there chased by helicopters and covered in vomit, doing not what you wanted but exactly what you asked for.

Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, and many other big names in science and technology have recently expressed concern about the risks posed by AI. AI has the potential to become more intelligent than any human, we have no sure way of predicting how it will behave. People now control the planet, not because we?re the strongest, fastest or biggest, but because we?re the smartest. If we?re no longer the smartest, are we assured to remain in control?

Introduction Benefits AI is progressing rapidly, 66 many aspects of our life. B卷

请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Scientists in the Philippines (菲律宾) are working to make changes to rice, hoping these changes will help solve one of the world?s biggest health issues: the lack of Vitamin A. The rice is called “golden rice” because it is yellow. It has been genetically changed, or modified, to produce beta carotene (胡萝卜素), a form of Vitamin A.

Vitamin A is missing from the food of millions of people in the developing world, which is the leading cause of childhood blindness. Young children and pregnant women can die from the lack of Vitamin A.

Patrick Moore, an ecologist and former Greenpeace president, supports production of golden rice. He says there should not even be debate about the issue while children starve.

1. 列举1至2个中外文化差异的事例; 2. 文化差异可能导致的后果。 请至少列举两条措施 Daniel Ocampo, an agriculture expert for Greenpeace, argues that golden rice is still not ready as a food for humans after 20 years of research. He says it could be more dangerous than its supporters will admit. 【写作内容】

1. 用约30个单词写出上文概要;

2. 用约120个单词阐述你对“黄金大米”的看法,并用2 ~3个理由或论据支撑你的看法。 【写作要求】

A

With the rapid development of globalization, communication among countries has become frequent. Due to cultural differences, we may be put to considerable inconvenience.

Frankly speaking, it?s necessary for us to be aware of cultural differences. For example, it is a common practice for the Chinese to use chopsticks while people in the west prefer to use forks and knives, which is because of different food they like. Besides, unlike Chinese, western people care more about personal space when they keep a conversation with others. If we fail to acknowledge cultural differences, misunderstandings will arise, inevitably leading to conflict.

Personally, we can?t attach more importance to cultural differences. People should accumulate as much information about cultures as possible through reading or the Internet, thus avoiding unintentional offense while in contact with people from different cultures, especially in this era of globalization. What?s more, we should keep in mind that mutual understanding and respect matter a lot in the global village. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

支持

Scientists in the Philippines are working hard to genetically modify rice to fight against Vitamin A deficiency. It has generated heated debate among the public. People?s opinions over it vary.

In my opinion, “golden rice” reflects the current trends in modern technology and should be welcomed, since it is no more than a way to relieve famine and cure certain diseases. It makes no sense to dismiss the idea of growing genetically modified crops when a vast majority of people worldwide are still suffering from hunger and certain diseases. In addition, just because the genetic engineering is a relatively new research area, it doesn?t necessarily mean the technology will spell disaster. Furthermore, there has been no solid evidence of the negative side effects of GM food on human beings so far.

In short, with new technologies developing at an ever-increasing speed daily, it could be safe to introduce “golden rice”.

反对

Scientists in the Philippines are working on genetically modifying rice, hoping to offer cures for Vitamin A deficiency, which has aroused public concern. Different people have different opinions on it.

In my opinion, “golden rice” hasn?t undergone enough test yet and shouldn?t be introduced in the first place. To begin with, no one can say for sure what effects it might have on us and our generations to come, for there has been much debate about it. To follow up, since GM crops are planted outside, they might also pose considerable threat to the food chain, which in turn, might influence the ecosystem. What?s more, because of the uncertainties of GM food, many countries have hesitated to give permission for the production of GM foods.

In conclusion, more work has to be done before the rice can be eaten by humans. Therefore, I would rather be cautious with “golden rice”.
