Most people think that making a film is exciting. In fact, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t. Earlier this year, I worked in a new film. It was about a bomb threat on a big British ship. Two hundred people were needed to act as the passengers in the film. I was one of them.

Before we left, we were wanted to bring some warm clothes. These were necessary because the ship was going to spend the whole 16 days sailing in bad weather.

Then the day came and we sailed out of Dover. The boat had on board the film crew, the director, the actors and actresses including Brinksley Meers, who acted the leading role, and us-200 amateur extras.

People came for different purposes. Some wanted to meet Brinksley Meers in person. Others were curious to see how a film was made. A housewife with her three children came for free holiday and a bit of adventure.

During the voyage, a lot of people were very seasick. And although the work was very interesting, it was also very hard. We often worked all day on one scene, performing it again and again under the hot lights. In the evenings, there were drinks in the bar, but most people were so tired that they went to bed early. The next day often began at 6:30 in the morning, sometimes with breakfast being filmed.

When the ship finally returned to port, most people had enjoyed the trip, but were also so tired that they at least needed a week’s holiday. Answer the following questions: 1. Which role did the author act in the film?

_______________________________________________________________________________. 2. Why the film crew were asked to bring some warm clothes?

_______________________________________________________________________________. 3. Who acted the leading role?

There are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. One of the most popular of these, even though it is fairly recent, is Mother’s Day. Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The Ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilaria, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”. The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years the custom was gradually forgotten and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century.

Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people---politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials---and asked them to support her ideas: a special day of the year for thanking mothers.

In 1910 the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother’s Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10---the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis’s mother died. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother’s Day throughout the United States.

Soon there was a Mother’s Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world.

Anna Jarvis, a sad and disillusioned woman died in 1948. The custom she had worked so hard to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business. As with Christmas, the giving of presents and the sending of cards had become a multi-million-dollar industry. (296words) 1. What is the story about?

_______________________________________________________________________________. 2. In which country was Hilaria celebrated as a festival?

_______________________________________________________________________________. 3. What did Anna Jarvis want to do for mothers?

_______________________________________________________________________________. 4. Why was May 10 the date for Mother’s Day?

_______________________________________________________________________________. 5. Why was Anna Jarvis not happy with Mother’s Day when she died?

A big part of being an effective team member is being a good listener. Do you think your listening skills could use some improving? Simply remember the LADDER to become a better listener.

Look at the person speaking to you.

If you make eye contact, the speaker feels like he has your undivided attention. If an individual comes into your office to talk, stop what you're doing. Ask questions.

This shows you're interested and that you're hearing what he's saying. Don't interrupt.

When you interrupt, the speaker feels you're not interested in what he's saying and will be frustrated by the inability to finish a complete thought. Take the time to listen – just relax and open your ears!

Don't change the subject.

Changing the subject indicates that your mind is elsewhere. It shows ___________________ what's being said at that moment, and this makes the speaker feel insignificant. Respond verbally and non-verbally.

Using an enthusiastic tone shows you're interested in what the speaker is saying. Smiling helps too! Avoid crossing your arms since this can be interpreted as being closed off. If you're speaking with someone who's sitting, you should sit too. Standing over someone is too authoritative and may make the other person feel uncomfortable.

If you're unsure whether you're a good listener or not, simply take the following test. In your next meeting or conversation, make a mental note or, even better, jot down on a piece of paper the number of times you interrupt. The fewer marks there are on your paper, the better listener you are! This seems like a silly test, but you may be surprised by the quantity of marks on your paper. After all, the worst listeners usually aren't aware that their listening skills need some attention or improvement.

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.

Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are

3

considered in danger.

Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.

Animals are more than beautiful or interesting or a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.

For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks (老鹰), the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied(繁殖)quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.

Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animals or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.[230]

Rome had the Forum, London has Speaker’s Corner. Now always-on-the-go New Yorkers have Liz and Bill.

Liz and Bill, two college graduates in their early 20s, have spent a whole year trying to have thousands of people talk to them in subway stations and on busy street corners. Just talk.

Using a 2-foot-tall sign that says,“Talk to Me,” they attract conversationalists, who one evening included a mental patient, and men in business suits.

They don’t collect money. They don’t push religion(宗教). So what’s the point?

“To see what happens,” said Liz. “ We simply enjoy life with open communication.”

Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, they decided to walk from New York City to Washington, a 270-mile trip. They found they loved talking to people along the way and wanted to continue talking with strangers after their return.

“It started as a crazy idea,” Liz said.“ We were so curious about all the strangers walking by with their life stories. People will talk to us about anything:their jobs, their clothes, their childhood experiences, anything.”

Denise wanted to talk about an exam she was about to take. She had stopped by for the second time in two days, to let the two listeners know how it went.

Marcia had lost her husband to a serious disease. “That was very heavy on my mind,” Marcia said, “To be able to talk about it to total strangers was very good,” she explained.

To celebrate a year of talking, the two held a get-together in a city park for all the people they had met over the past year. A few hundred people showed up, as well as some television cameramen and reporters.

They may plan more parties or try to attract more people to join their informal talks. Some publishers have expressed interest in a book, something they say they’ll consider.

Desertification and Sandstorms (DSS) has great environmental _____ that cause large economic losses, has a serious effect on public health over a wide area, and sometimes takes human life. For example, the DSS on 5 May, 1993 directly affected1.1 million square kilometers in China, which resulted in 85 persons dead, 256injured, 120,000 livestock dead or lost, and a great deal of cropland damaged.

The two worst DSSs in the ten years took place in March and April 2002. They swept across Mongolia and hit 18 provinces in China, the Korean Peninsular, and a large area of Japan. The DSS in April forced Mongolia to close its international airport in Ulaanbaatar for 3 days, and the Republic of Korea to close some schools and take off more than 40 flights from Kimpo Airport in Seoul.

Natural causes of DSS are large desert and semi desert areas, strong winds from Siberia sweeping these DSS originating source areas, lasting drought, and other natural disasters.

Their effects have been strengthened, however, by human activities over the last few years, particularly through overgrazing, deforestation, and overexploitation of water resources in the DSS originating source areas, which lead to rapid land desertification. So, effective actions are urgently needed in the DSS originating source areas in China and Mongolia to prevent desertification of the land, before the situation becomes worse.

1. Fill in the blank in paragraph 1.________________ (one word) 2. Why do we call DSS a natural disaster?

One of New York’s most beautiful and valuable buildings is in danger. The New York Public Library, in the heart of the city at 42nd Street and 5th Avenue, many have to close its doors.

The library is a very special place. Even though it is in the busiest part of the city, it has grass and trees around it, and benches for people to sit on. Even more unusual in crowded New York, its rooms are very large. The roof of the main reading-room is fifty-one feet high. Here, a reader can sit and think and work in comfort.

And what books are there to work with? The library has over thirty million books and paintings. It owns one of the first copies of a play by Shakespeare, a Bible printed by Gutenberg in the 15th century, and a letter written by Columbus in which he tells of finding the new world.

Every New Yorker can see and use the library’s riches free.

But the cost of running the library has risen rapidly in recent years, and the library hasn’t enough money to continue its work. In the past, it was open every evening and also on Saturdays and Sundays. Now it is closed at those times, to save money.

The library is trying every possible way to raise more money to meet its increasing costs. Well-known New York writers and artists are trying to help .So are the universities, whose students use the library, and the government of New York City and New York State. But the problem remains serious.

Yet a way must be found to save the library because, as one writer said, “The Public Library is the most important building in New York City--- it contains all our knowledge.” 1. What part of New York City is the Public Library at?
