Period One Welcome to the Unit

Step I Warm-up (presentation)
Give students a riddle to guess. Let them guess an electrical appliance.
T: Now today before we learn the new lesson, I’d like you to guess a riddle. It’s an electrical appliance, please listen carefully.
It has a screen, which is not very big. We can see the tourist attractions all over the world on it. It tells us the latest news of the world every day. What is it? S: It’s TV.
T: That’ right. It’s a television. I think most of you like it, because it brings many interesting things to us. So first let’s get to have a close look at the television itself. I will show you three pictures of
televisions. Please try to arrange them from the earliest time to the latest time.

T: Right. From the picture, we can see with the development of technology, the television is getting
better and better. In the early time, we have the television like c, it’s a black-white colored TV. All the pictures on it are black and white. Later, we have the TV like a, it’s bigger and has a colorful picture. And nowadays, we have the TV like b, a digital TV. The picture and the sound of it are much better than a. and b. Now I have another question what’s the machine beside the television a? S: It’s a remote control.
T: Good. It’s a remote control. We use it to control the TV. Now let’s get to learn other words about TV. (Part A) Page 63 2. Survey.
T: With the improvement of TV, we can watch more programmes with good audiovisual quality. So among these programme, which one do you like best?
Show some pictures of some TV programmes of different types and ask students which one they would like. Divide the class into several groups and do a mini-survey. Ask students which is their favorite programme to watch. Then ask the group leader to report the results. Step II Listening
T: I knew your favorite TV programmes now, but what about Eddie’s life with TV? Listen to the
tape, answer my questions. Show the questions on the screen. When does Eddie watch TV? What will Eddie do after watching TV?
Play the recording for the first time, students just listen. Play it for a second time, ask students to tell the answers. T: OK. When does Eddie watch TV? S1: Eddie has to watch TV from 9 to 12. T: Good. When will Eddie have lunch?
S2: He will have lunch and a little sleep between 2 and 7.
Step III Practice
T: Now, let’s come to comic strip. Look at the dialogue in the pictures, please read it.
Give students 3 minutes to read the dialogue and act it out. Then ask them to talk about Eddie’s life like this:
Show the following on the screen.
Eddie has to ______ from 9:00 a.m. ______ 12:00 a.m.. He will have lunch and a little ______ ______ 2:00 p.m. ______ 7:00 p.m. ______ that, it’s ______ time.
Step IV TV programmes
T: You have made a survey on your favorite TV programmes, but what TV programmes would I like to watch? Just guess.
Show the picture to students and ask students to tell the type of the programme.
S1: You would like to watch the movies on TV.
T: Yes, you are so clever. Here I have some more TV programmes for you.
Ask students to study the words on Page 63 and write 1-10 in the blanks (1= your favorite programme, 10 = your least favorite programme). Then check the answers.
Go through the pictures one by one, tell them some more information about the programmes in Chinese or English.
T: Just now I told you some different kinds of TV programmes, but do you know all the meaning of each programme? Now, let’s come to section B. Make a list of your favorite programmes from 1 to 10.
The Ss may give kinds of answers.
T: Well done. I think all of us have our own preference, so each person will give a different list in his mind.
Ask students to look at the names of the programmes in the blanks. Ask several students to read them out and then help them correct the pronunciation.
Step V Discussion
T: Introduce one of your favourite TV programmes to your partner. Give the Ss three to five minutes to discuss in pairs. S1: Which TV programme do you like best? S2: My favourite one is drama. S1: How often do you watch it? S2: I watch it almost every day. …
Ask some pairs to act their dialogues out.
