On Sina Weibo and QQ, to show that we think something is cool, we might use the “smoking emoji(表情符 号)” --- a character wearing dark sunglasses and enjoying a cigarette. But recently, this emoji has had some changes.
In September, Sina Weibo removed(移除)the cigarette from the emoji. And on Nov. 6, mobile app QQ replaced its smoking emoji with one that has a green leaf in its mouth, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.
The move came after the Beijing Tobacco Control association (BTCA,北京市控烟协会) asked for the emoji to be removed from Chinese social media, saying it might mislead young people. Both Sina Weibo and QQ have a large number of users and their emojis could influence these people.
“Smoking doesn’t mean pleasure and fun in life,” Zhang Jianshu, director of the BTCA, told China Daily, “Young people may get the wrong idea that smoking is a symbol of fashion and handsomeness.”
In China, about two-thirds of men smoke and most begin to do so in their 20s, according to a report in 2015. The study noted that if it isn’t controlled, about one-third of young Chinese men could die from smoking-related illnesses.
Luckily, recent years have seen increased efforts to stop people from picking up this bad habit. “Stopping young people from starting smoking is almost like a vaccine(疫苗)--- it is protecting them for life,” Bernhard Schwartlander, WHO representative in China, told China Daily.

What do you usually do to comfort(安慰)your friends when they are feeling down or upset? You probably touch them on the back or shoulder softly, or maybe you give them a big, warm hug or do something to encourage them. Knowing when and how to comfort others is the ability that humans have.
Two researchers from Emory University in Atlanta, US, went to a protection center to study bonobos(倭黑猩 猩), which are like humans. The researchers studied the bonobos’ reactions(反应)after being in more than 370 stressful situations, such as fights and getting mad, and found that some bonobos rushed to hug those that were shouting after being hit , just like humans. So bonobos have the same ability to comfort others as the humans.
However, researchers noticed that not all bonobos were able to comfort others. In the protection center, many bonobos are orphans(孤儿)whose mothers were killed. They were found to be more nervous and to have greater trouble controlling their own feelings, making it harder for them help friends in need.
“Orphans, who have not been taught to control feelings, are much worse at comforting others,” Professor Frans de Waal, one of the researchers, told The Telegraph. “Bonobos with moms were able to curb their bad feelings more quickly. So they pay more attention to others.”
This reflects the way that human children have been found to react. Those who seem better at controlling their own feelings --- for example, the ones who can calm themselves down more quickly --- are usually better at expressing their care for others.
53. When others feel down, you can do the following to comfort them except __________.
A. giving them a hug B. pointing at them with fingers C. saying some encouraging words D. touching their shoulders softly 54. The underlined word “curb” in the 4 th paragraph probably means “__________”.

People always believe highly intelligent children are sure to achieve success in schoolwork. However, this is not always true. In fact, talented students may fail to do well. Making a talented child succeed needs knowledge about how to guide them.
Some reasons can be found for their failure. One common reason is that many people around the smart kids always say how important it is to be smart. This can make them believe that smart people do not have to work hard
英语试题卷 第 5 页 / 共 8 页
to do well. Although smart kids may not need to work hard when the work is easy, they may do badly when the work gets harder because they do not make the effort to learn. If their academic achievement remains low for a period, many teachers will not see their potential(潜力). As a result, such students may not get the encouragement they need and this can make them become less interested in learning. They may fall far behind in their schoolwork and even develop behavior problems.
Being smart is just one reason for success. Children depend on many other things to succeed. These include hard work, patience, the support of family, teachers, friends and so on.
Because highly talented children solve the most difficult problems faster and better, they need other ways to be educated. Two main ways used to educate such children are acceleration and enrichment. Acceleration means studying knowledge for older students. Enrichment means learning information that isn’t from the usual subjects.
A child might skip(跳级)one or more grades as a way of acceleration in school. But being with older children can make a child feel down. One very smart fourth-grader who had skipped two grades remained smarter, but as his classmates reached puberty(青春期), his social and other weak points became painfully clear.
While acceleration is not a good choice, enrichment can be. After all, school is not a race. The goal is not finishing first but learning as much knowledge as possible. So providing chances for a child to study information outside the usual subjects can be more valuable than pushing him or her learn faster.
57. __________ is the common reason why highly intelligent children failed to achieve success.
A. Teachers’ failure to see their potential B. Being told how important it is to be smart
C. Studying knowledge outside the usual subjects D. Teachers’ failure to encourage them
58. According to the passage, __________ belongs to enrichment activities for talented children.
A. studying together with older children
B. learning the same knowledge as the older students C. learning information that isn’t from the usual subjects D. learning how to read faster than the other classmates
59. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. People believe highly intelligent children always do well in schoolwork. B. The writer prefers acceleration to enrichment.
C. Smart students may not be encouraged so they have less interest in study. D. Intelligence is not the only reason for achieving success.
60. If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?
(①=Para. 1; ②=Para. 2; ③=Para. 3; ④=Para. 4; …) A. ①②;③④;⑤⑥ B. ①;②③④⑤;⑥ C. ①;②③④;⑤⑥ D. ①;②③;④⑤⑥

We are not born with courage(勇气), but we are not born with fear, either. Fear can totally destroy us. Fear can destroy luck, relationships and our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies living inside us. Let me tell you about two of the other enemies we must face inside us.
The first enemy we face is indecision. Indecision is called the thief of chances. It will steal your chances for a better future, which stops you from being a better person. Sometimes a good chance means more than hard work. But because of indecision, you lose your valuable chance unluckily. The longer you spend making the decision, the more difficult it is for you to make a right one. However, remember to consider everything before making decisions.
The second enemy inside you is doubt. Some people doubt everything. But you can’t let doubt control you. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt other people and the government, and also doubt the possibilities and doubt the chances. I’m telling you, with doubt in your heart, your chances of success will be lost
and your life will get worse. Worst of all, it will empty your heart if you doubt yourselves and not believe in yourselves to finish tasks well.
You are supposed to defeat(打败)fear in your heart and enemies inside your heart. Make every effort to build your courage to fight against what’s stopping you from succeeding, and what’s keeping you from your goals and dreams. Have courage in your life and go for the things you want and the person you want to become. 66. Are people supposed to let doubt control them?
