Teaching parents to switch channels(频道)from violent shows to educational TV can improve preschoolers’ behavior, even without getting them to watch less, a study found. “It’s not just about turning off the television. It’s about changing the channel. What children watch is as important as how much they watch,” said lead author, Dr. Dimitri Christakis, a pediatrician (儿科医生) and researcher at Seattle Children's Research Institute. The study involved 565 Seattle parents, who periodically filled out TV-watching diaries and questionnaires(问卷)measuring their child’s behavior.
Half were guided for six months on getting their 3-to-5- year-old kids to watch shows like “Sesame Street”,“Bob the Builder”, “Clifford the Big Red Dog” and“Dora the Explorer” rather than “Happy Tree Friend” or “Power Rangers.” The result were compared with kids whose parents get advice on healthy eating instead.
At six months, children in both groups showed improved behavior, but there was a little bit more improvement in the group that was coached on their TV watching.
By one year, there was no meaningful differences between the two groups overall. Low-income boys appeared to get the most short-term benefit.
“That’s important because they are at the greatest risk, both for being perpetrators of aggression (侵害) in real life, but also being victims of aggression,” Christakis said.
The study also has some weakness---the parents weren't told the purpose of the study, but they probably figured it out and that might have affected the results. Though the results were modest and faded over time, they may hold promise for finding ways to help young children avoid aggressive, violent behavior.
1. The passage is written to _______ . A. describe kids’ different behavior.
B. inform parents of their kids’ behavior.
C. persuade parents not to let kids watching TV. D. offer some useful tips to improve kids’ behavior.
2. Which of the following shows can be a little more violent? A. Bob the Builder B. Dora the Explorer C. Power Ranger D. Sesame Street
3. The word “perpetrators” in Paragraph 7 probably refers to ______ . A. people who do something wrong or bad. B. people who suffer a lot in real life. C. victims who are killed in a fight.
D. criminals who are sentenced to death. 4. What does the author think of the study?
A. Imperfect but valuable.
B. Perfect but time-consuming. C. Lengthy and useless D. Meaningful and perfect
B
Back in old times, people had little knowledge about the universe and nature. Things we now consider to be common sense were mysteries to our ancestors.
Over the years, major breakthroughs have been made in science and many phenomena (现象) have been explained. But still, there are always questions we can’t yet answer, and The Guardian has listed some.
1. What makes us human?
Just looking at your DNA won’t tell you---human DNA is 99 percent identical to that of the chimpanzee and, believe it or not, 50 percent identical to a banana’s! A lot of things we once thought were unique about us---language and tool use, recognizing ourselves in the mirror and so on---have since been seen in other animals. Perhaps it’s our culture that makes the difference or maybe our ability to use fire. It’s also possible that our capacity(能力) for co-operation and our trading skills are what make us unique.
2. Why do we dream?
Given the fact that we spend around a third of our lives sleeping, shouldn’t we know everything about it? Unfortunately, scientists are still searching for a complete explanation of what happens when we sleep and why we dream.
Austrian psychologist(心理学家) Sigmund Freud believed dreams were the expressions of wishes that we can’t fulfill in our real lives. Others have wondered whether dreams are just random “noise” coming from a sleeping brain.
3. Could we some day live forever?
Apart from accidents, most people die because of diseases that can not be treated and aging. And since many diseases, such as diabetes (糖尿病) and cancer, are diseases of aging, treating aging itself could be the key to extending our lives.
Our knowledge of what causes us to age---and what allows some animals to live longer than others---is developing rapidly. And though we haven’t quite worked out all the details, we’ve worked out some pieces of the puzzles such as DNA damage and metabolism(新陈代谢), which are all leading to the invention of drugs that slow down the aging process.
If we are luckily enough to lengthen our lives, we might even get to see the day when all these questions are answered.
5. The main idea of the passage is _______.
A. to inform people of the knowledge about the universe and nature B. to introduce major breakthroughs that have been made in science C. to present some questions that we can’t answer
D. to explain what were once mysteries to our ancestors
6. Chimpanzees and bananas are mentioned as examples to prove that _______. A. human beings are actually not different from other animals B. animals have completely different DNA from that of plants C. both animals and plants share the same amount of DNA D. DNA alone is not good enough to make humans different
1
7. The underlined word “identical” is closest in meaning to _______. A. mysterious B. unique C. advanced D. same
8. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. What were mysteries to our ancestors are considered to be common sense now. B. Now we know much more about dreams than our ancestors did in the past. C. With the invention of new drugs people can possibly live even longer. D. If all the diseases can be treated, people can theoretically live forever.
C
It seems that many college graduates are not sure of what to do with their lives, so they jump back into the college scene by default (违约). But graduate school is costly, time-consuming and requires a lot of in-depth study, and also parents will pay more money and banks will supply more student loans.
However, there are some students who should be pursuing graduate degrees. Teachers, lawyers, doctors, professors and ministers are a few examples of those who will benefit from class work past a bachelor’s degree. Their professions call for additional courses and more specialization and therefore higher education is a must. Still, all students in general should not adopt the idea that graduate school is necessary for persons who want to make more money. Working hard right after college can lead to promotion in the future. It seems that it does more good to network or internship (实习) with professionals while pursuing a bachelor’s degree than it does to complete a master’s and get away from the world of work.
If a student graduates with a four-year degree and immediately enter the work force, he will most likely start an entry-level pay. In a couple of years this employee will gain seniority(资历) and experience, therefore increasing their chance for pay rise. He will learn the information at his jobsite that he did not learn in school. His bachelor’s degree loan can be immediately chipped away, and his maturity level can increase as real work relates responsibilities. But if the student pursues a master’s degree, he may be able to demand more pay at first when he finally goes job hunting, but years of serious money making as well as work experience will already be lost.
Students should not shy from the workforce just because of uncertainty following graduation. Those who purse a graduate degree just because they do not want to leave school and because they view the “real world” as scary should think again. Using graduate studies as a hiding place from the full-time job is a waste of time.
9. College students who go to work can ______ than those who pursue graduate
degrees.
A. make more money in the future B. acquire more experience C. get a better job D. become more responsible
10. The underlined words “chipped away” can most possibly be replaced by_______. A. given out B. set down C. thrown away D. paid off 11. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. College graduates shouldn’t pursue graduate degrees B. College graduates should think twice
C. How can college graduates make more money?
D. Students use graduate school to avoid reality
D
You have probably heard of the Mozart(莫扎特) effect. It’s the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed by Mozart will become cleverer. On the Internet, you can find plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music. But when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you cleverer, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature. The media and the public showed great interest in the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself. His music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we will become cleverer.
The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children. In 1998 Zell Miller, the governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children that were listening to Mozart’s music on purpose. Even an Italian farmer proudly explained that he played Mozart to his cows three times a day to help them produce better milk.
I’ll leave the debate about the Mozart effect on cows, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people cleverer? More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it does not make us cleverer.
12. Why did many people believe in the idea of the Mozart effect? A. Because a study described it in the Journal Nature. B. Because Mozart himself was a genius. C. Because Mozart’s music is enjoyable. D. Because Mozart’s music makes people relaxed.
13. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 suggests that ______ . A. people were strongly against the idea B. the idea was accepted by many people C. Mozart played a very important part in people’s life D. the US government helped promote the idea 14. What was the author’s attitude towards the Mozart effect? A. Favorable. B. Objective.
C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
15. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Listening to Mozart, necessary?
B. What music is beneficial? C. What is the Mozart effect? D. Classical music or Mozart?

从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项.
Love and friendship They are both so related to each other. And both are so dissimilar! What are the differences between friendship and love? Is platonic (柏拉图式的) friendship possible between persons of the opposite sex? 16 What is friendship? Why do we call a person our friend? When do we call someone a very good friend? If we care for a person, if we are always ready to help that person and if we share most of our thoughts with a person, they are our good friends. We can always rely on our good friends in an emergency. We are always sure that our good friends will
understand why we acted in a certain way. 17 The friendship is so deep and the
relationship is so intimated (暗示) that most of the things are automatically understood by our friends. 18 In a relationship of deep love, all the sharing that we discussed above is taken for granted. But love transcends (超出) all this. During love, we are attached to a particular person. While in friendship, one may have many friends. A loving relationship makes one so much attached to the other that one gets pained if his/her beloved is hurt. Love also involves a physical element (因素). 19 This is a vital difference. Nature gives us love so that the species can go forward. Nature does not give us friendship. Your heart beats will never increase in anticipation of (预期) meeting your friend. 20 . You will not feel totally lost, if you don’t meet your friend for a few days. You will
not have dreams in your eyes thinking about your friend. But in love, you will do all this
and much more. Indeed, there is no comparison between love and friendship.
A. What about love?
B. My answer is “Yes”.
C. Let’s try and understand.
D. Friendship does not have that.
E. We need not explain anything to our good friends.
F. You will not lie awake at night thinking about your friend.
G. The physical element may include hand in hand while walking.
