Mrs. Jones was very fond of singing. She had a good voice, except that some of her high notes(音调) tended to(往往会) sound like a gate which someone had forgotten to oil. Mrs. Jones was very conscious of(意识到)) this weakness, and took every opportunity she could find to practise these high notes. As she lived in a small house, where she could not practise without disturbing the rest of the family, she usually went for a long walk along the country roads whenever she had time, and practised her high notes there. Whenever she heard a car

or a person coming along the road, she stopped and waited until she could no longer be heard before she started practising again, because she was a shy person, and because she was sensitive about those high notes.

One afternoon, however, a fast, open car came up behind her so silently and so fast that she did not hear it until it was only a few yards from her. She was singing some of her highest and most difficult notes at the time, and as the car passed her, she saw an anxious expression suddenly come over its driver's face. He put his brakes(刹车)on violently (猛力地), and as soon as the car stopped, jumped out and began to examine all his tyres(轮胎)carefully.

Mrs. Jones did not dare to tell him what the noise he had heard had really been, so he got back into his car and drove off as puzzled as he had been when he stopped. 71. Mrs. Jones loved singing very much.

72. She had a good voice with wonderful high notes.

There are stock(股票) markets in large cities in

All the Whites’ farm animals—the cows and the goats, the ducks and the chickens got along well with Roger---one llama (美洲驼). But since llamas are used to thinking of animals like coyotes(土狼)and dogs as threats(威胁), it took Roger a few weeks to accept the family dog.

5

Each llama has its own personality, and Roger’s special qualities quickly won the hearts of the Whites’ family. “Roger has a wonderful nature with most people,” Mrs. White said,“But if he is not pleased with you, he won’t come around you at all. If he really doesn’t like you, he’ll leave and take all of the sheep with him.”

Roger protects the sheep and lambs in two ways. First, he keeps the sheep together. A hungry coyotes will try to scatter(驱散) the flock(羊群) and then pick off a weak or small animal that has become separated from the rest. But when a coyote threatens the Whites’ sheep, they all run to Roger, depending on him to defend them.

And he does, with his second defense: confronting(与…正面交锋) the coyote. Llamas are very curious and will run at fast speed to investigate(调查)anything that looks interesting. When a coyote sees a three-hundred-pound llama dashing toward(冲向) it, the coyote will not usually wait around to see what the llama wants.

And once a llama realizes that a coyote is threatening the flock, the llama will stand between the coyote and the sheep to defend them. Often, the llama will charge toward the coyote with its head down. As it runs, it will sometimes call out an alarm to the flock in a high-pitched warble(高调颤声). Since Roger’s arrival, coyotes haven’t got any sheep from the Whites’. 99. What is llamas’ native place?
