Poor areas of India may have few doctors or other health resources. Instead, many people turn to traditional healers (医疗者) when they are ill. These traditional healers, or witch doctors, sometimes have strange theories (学说) about how the body works. In West Bengal, for example, some people have long believed that getting bitten by a dog leads to the birth of little dogs.
Dr Kumar Kanti Ghosh is a psychiatrist. He heard this belief when a nine-year-old boy came to his
office about ten days after being bitten by a dog. He really couldn't believe his ears when he heard that. Kanti Ghosh said, “He believes that he had a little dog developing inside him. And his parents have said that sometimes the boy is barking like a dog.”
A healer named Budheswar Singh says his medicine made of yogurt and herbs has cured many people. “If the man is brought to me in time, I can give him my medicine and he will be all right,” he said.
Sanjay Samui is a medical doctor who wishes people would stop believing ideas like this. “They are poorly-educated village people. They still strongly believe such odd ideas,” he said. He tells everyone that
in no situation can a dog be born by a human.
The national government spends about one and a half percent of India's GDP on health care. This is among the lowest rates in the world. It means such traditional healers are the only choice in some places. The healers spread medical myths (神话) and even make villagers not believe doctors.

22.When Dr Kumar Kanti Ghosh heard what the boy told him, he was________. A.happy B.shocked C.relaxed D.interested
解析:选B 推理判断题。根据第二段的“He really couldn't believe his ears when he heard that.”可推断Kumar Kanti Ghosh医生当时很惊讶。
23.We can learn from the last paragraph that in India ________. A.some traditional healers are very helpful B.people believe whatever doctors tell them
C.doctors are not as helpful as traditional healers
D.more money should be spent on the public health care 解析:选D 推理判断题。根据末段的“The national government spends about one and a half percent of India's GDP on health care. This is among the lowest rates in the world.”可知印度需要在公共医疗上投入更多的钱。
24.What would be the best title for this passage? A.In poor Indian areas, traditional healers help B.In poor Indian areas, medical myths spread
C.In poor Indian areas, doctors are useless D.In poor Indian areas, people refuse help

Mr. Harris used to work in Dover, but then he changed his work, and he and his wife moved to another town. They did not have many friends there, but they soon met a lot of interesting people, and after a few weeks, they often went to dinner or to parties at other people's houses.
Then Mrs. Harris said to her husband, “We've been to a lot of other people's houses, and now we must invite them to our house, needn't we?”
“Yes, certainly,” answered her husband, “A big party will be the easiest thing, won't it? Then we can start to invite people to dinner in small numbers next month.”
So Mrs. Harris said, “Yes, I'll invite all our friends here to a big party on 5th December.” “How many will that be?” Mr. Harris asked. “Don't invite too many.”
Mrs. Harris was beginning to write the invitation when her husband saw that she was writing, “Party: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm”
“That isn't very nice, is it?” he said. “You're telling our guests that they must go at 8:30.” So Mrs. Harris just wrote “Party: 6:30 pm”
A lot of guests came, and they all had a good time, so they did not go home at 8:30. In fact they were still there at mid-night when the doorbell rang and a policeman arrived. He said, “You must stop making a
noise, because someone has complained (抱怨).”
Mr. Harris said he did not want to quarrel with the policeman, so everyone went home. They were sorry to have to go.
When Mr. and Mrs. Harris were alone again, she said to him, “That was a surprise, wasn't it? Who complained about the noise?”
“I did,” Mr Harris answered in a tired voice.

27.How long would Mrs. Harris like the party to last? A.From the morning till night. B.About fourteen hours. C.About two hours. D.Till midnight.
28.When did the party end that evening? A.At about 8:30.
B.When the policeman talked with Mr. Harris on the phone. C.About twelve o'clock.
D.When someone telephoned the police station.

When Regis Mangwiro and the other villagers moved to a new place in southeastern Zimbabwe, Africa, they were happy to find a lake nearby. Now, they would no longer have to walk long distances looking for water. At last they had a source of water what they call their own.
But several days later, two young boys saw something they had never seen before — a huge animal was standing at the edge of the lake, having grass. When the animal saw the boys, it walked into the lake and disappeared beneath the water.
Regis looked into the story of the big creature that vanished into the lake. “When I took a closer look at the dung (粪便), I realized that it was from a hippo (河马),” he said.
Twelve hippos were living in the lake. The villagers were worried. In the country of Zimbabwe, hippos attack humans more often than lions do. The hippos would often stay on the village side of the lake all day. This meant that the villagers could not go near the lake until the hippos got out. It was too long a wait for the villagers, because they needed the water from the lake to survive. “This is the only source of fresh water in the village,” said a villager. “There is no way we can avoid this lake.” So the women began moving in groups whenever they went to fetch water from the lake. Before collecting water, they made sure no hippos were nearby. The men began fishing in pairs, with one man always looking out for hippos.
It took time, but these days, the hippos and humans live side by side. The villagers say that when the hippos spot people coming, they swim slowly to the other side of the lake and mind their own business. The villagers do not go into the part of the lake where the hippos usually stay. They have learned to share the lake they both need to survive.

解析:选A 词义猜测题。由上一段的“it walked into the lake and disappeared beneath the water”可知巨大的动物消失在水中。

Street art is a very popular form of art that is spreading quickly all over the world. You can find it on buildings, sidewalks, street signs and trash cans from Tokyo to Paris, from Moscow to Cape Town. Street art has become a global culture and even art museums and galleries are collecting the works of street artists.
Street art started out very secretly because it was illegal to paint on public and private property
without permission. People often have different opinions about street art. Some think it is a crime and others think it is a very beautiful new form of culture.
Art experts claim that the street art movement began in New York in the 1960s. Young adults painted words and other images on walls and trains. This colorful style of writing became known as graffiti. Graffiti art showed that young people wanted to rebel against society. They traveled around cities to create paintings that everyone could see. In many cases, they had trouble with the police and the local government.
Street artists do their work for different reasons. Some of them do not like artists who make so much money in galleries and museums. They choose street art because it is closer to the people. Some artists try to express their political opinion in their work. They often want to protest(抗议) against big firms and corporations. Others like to do things that are forbidden and hope they don't get caught. Advertising companies also use street art in their ads because it gives people the impression of youth and energy.
Today, the Internet has a big influence on street art. Artists can show their pictures to an audience all over the world. Many city residents, however, say that seeing a picture on the Internet is never as good as seeing it alive. The street art movement lives with the energy and life of a big city. There, it will continue to change and grow.
